As a recipient of many national awards, Roswell, Georgia is arguably one of the best places in the country to live work play and raise a family. In this episode, we're going to talk to Rand Cabus at Mojo Vinyl right in the heart of Roswell on Alpharetta Street.
Tell Us About Mojo Vinyl
We've been in business for about 10 years. We're Roswell's best little record store...the local shop where we have new releases as well as used records. I consider myself the king of dad rock!
I knew that kids down in Little Five were buying records at Criminal, but I wondered if suburban dads... would baby boomer dads buy records the same way? That's something I proved was true with Mojo Vinyl. Everybody loves the record. It was always the best way to listen to music, and we celebrate that every day at Mojo Vinyl.
Where did you get the inspiration to open Mojo Vinyl?
So, I started reading about how records were starting to bubble back up again. I read about this event called the Record Store Day, which from a marketing guy's perspective was just brilliant. It struck a little light bulb in my head. The second one was -- my son and I went to a show at Variety Playhouse, and we went into Criminal Records. They had a copy of Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced?, and it was a remastered reissue of it from 10 or 11 years ago. I didn't realize they were still making records, and just another light bulb went off of my head.
I had recently got my turntable out, which had been put away for 10-15 years. I was enjoying it with my son and we we're listening to records and I thought about how my old Jimmy Hendrix record is beat to crap. It looks terrible, you know? And here's a brand-new one that's about 25 bucks! It's got the the liner notes, it's got a booklet -- it's like a big heavy package. I was like...this is great! Another little light bulb went off on my head.
Baby boomer guys like me would love to go re-listen to that on their record player!
Tell us about your events and specials...
Every week we have three specials:
- Tuesdays - 2 Buck Tuesday - Two dollars off any record
- Wednesdays - Buy two get one free. Buy two $12 or more records you get a 12 hour or less record for free
- Sundays - We have a new program we just started about two months ago - it's Half-PriceJazz. Al the used jazz records are half-price all day Sunday. Sunday is a great day to listen to jazz and jazz music!
Do you sell record players?
We do sell record players...We sell new turntables and used turntables. We've got four new turntables in stock. They start at about a hundred bucks and go up to about $400, and we have used turntables as well. Some people like that that original nostalgic look and feel -- and they range probably $50 to $200.
